My Approach

My Approach

The therapeutic relationship is an essential component of treatment success. An environment of safety, non-judgment, support, and trust are critical to growth and lasting change. I make a strong effort to facilitate such an environment, but not all people or personality types are able to make a strong connection together. I encourage you to assess your comfortability with me and my therapeutic style during the first few sessions. Becoming an active participant in your treatment can start with a conscious decision about whether you wish to work with me or not. If one or both of us do not feel this will be a good fit, I am able to provide referrals to other providers in the community.

Therapeutic Orientation

I utilize a number of empirically supported treatment methods, but rely heavily on cognitive behavioral (CBT), and dialectical behavioral (DBT) approaches to treatment. Psychoeducation is often a large component of treatment with me. It is my belief that the more you understand your conditions and/or the dynamics that play out in your life, the more equipped you will be to navigate life's challenges as they arise. I also take a holistic approach towards treatment, recognizing that what we talk about involves many aspects of a person's life and body.

Medication

As a Psychologist, I am not able to prescribe medication. I also do not have a blanket policy on medication. I make my best effort to treat without medication as many patients are anxious about taking this step. Nonetheless, when an illness negatively impacts your ability to respond to treatment, work, maintain relationships, and/or care for yourself, then a medication evaluation may be recommended. In those cases medication can offer much needed relief and actually facilitate gains in treatment.

Most Common Reasons for Referral to Another Provider

Any mismatch between your needs and what I can reasonably provide will be subject to referral to another provider or agency in the community.

  • Presence of symptoms which would be best served in a different treatment setting or higher level of care.

  • Concerns which require specialized care (i.e. active substance abuse, active eating disorders, family or couples counseling...etc.).

  • Desire or need to meet more frequently than what can be accommodated.

  • Desire for a treatment type that I do not specialize in

  • Recent deterioration in mental health, or a lack treatment progress which would deem our therapy model ineffective/inappropriate.

  • Requests for formal psychological assessment (i.e. ADHD, social security, court mandated, parenting...etc.). When I act as your therapist, I cannot take on this dual role. You will have to see another provider for those services.
